The wedding weekend festivities will be occurring in two neighboring towns – Basalt and Carbondale, Colorado. We live in Carbondale, and Kristin works in Basalt.
We plan on having some sort of gathering Friday night in Carbondale, so everyone can see our hometown.
The wedding ceremony and reception will be in Basalt, in an area of town named Willits (also know for being “the place with the Whole Foods”)*. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get between the two towns, depending on the time of day and traffic (Kristin does this commute daily). Glenwood Springs is about 30 minutes from the venue and offers easy access to I-70 and additional lodging options. Glenwood is the only real place with stores if you need anything last minute (it has a Target AND a Wal-mart!)*
*All joking aside, living in a rural place means that people get really excited when there is a glimmer of life in more populated areas. So when the next nearest Whole Foods, Costco and Target are hours away, it becomes a claim-to-fame locally.
Where to stay
IMPORTANT | Given the rural nature of the Roaring Fork Valley, be careful when using a zip code to find lodging. Much of the West has large unincorporated areas assigned to a zip code associated with the nearest town, resulting in a significant geographic area with that same zip code. For example: Carbondale’s is 81623, and the zip code covers 43 square miles, while the Town of Carbondale is only 2 square miles. Basalt’s is 81621, with the zip code covering more than 220 square miles, meaning some short-term lodging options could be more than an hour’s drive away. The Town of Basalt is also only 2 square miles.
For best results, either use our home address (on the save the date) or the venue’s (400 Robinson St, Basalt, CO 81621) as your targeted destination, and be sure to look up the lodging’s address on a map prior to booking to ensure it is near the fun.

Carbondale and beyond
There are three hotels in Carbondale: the budget friendly Comfort Inn & Suites and the Days Inn, and the boutique Distillery Inn. Depending on the season, the room rates can significantly outpace the expected value (i.e. In Summer 2023, the Comfort Inn and Days Inn had room rates of $400+ for a weekend night).
For those looking for a higher end/more luxury experience, and are willing to drive 30-40 minutes, there are plenty of hotel options in Snowmass Village and Aspen.
Hotel Colorado, in Glenwood Springs, is a historic hotel (and possibly haunted), within walking distance of the hot springs pool and downtown Glenwood Springs. One of its claims to fame is that the Teddy Bear (the stuffed animal) was invented there. It is about 22 minutes from Carbondale.
Avalanche Ranch is a rural and more rustic option, located on a 36 acre ranch. It has a total of 18 unique cabins and gypsy wagons with 24 hour access to the hot springs on the property. It is about 15 minutes from Carbondale along Hwy 133.
AirBnBs/VRBOs | Short-term rentals
For those who are looking for a more homey experience, there are several options in and around Basalt and Carbondale. Please reach out to us with any questions.
BASALT | Learn more at basaltchamber.org
While Basalt is only 2 square miles, it has several different neighborhoods. The two main sections are Historic Downtown and Willits, although there are other smaller residential areas. Hwy 82 runs the length of town, and it is the easiest way to get back and forth. Any home within Basalt proper will be in close proximity to the venue, with access to the free, on-demand shuttle Basalt Connects.
Willits
The Willits area of Basalt is only about 20 years old and is the modern section of town. It is best known for Willits Town Center (a shopping area) and the fact that it has a Whole Foods. Most of Willits is within walking distance of the venue.
Historic Downtown
Historic Downtown (where Kristin works) originated in the 1880-90s, as evident by the Victorian-style architecture, including Midland Ave (Basalt’s main street which dates back to the railroad days). It is a cute part of town, however in 2024, Midland Ave will be undergoing a major infrastructure project, so it may be best to avoid staying in the area.
In between Basalt and Carbondale
Equidistant between Basalt and Carbondale (8 minutes either way), along Hwy 82, there is a small development named The Ranch at Roaring Fork. It is located between the two traffic lights that head into Carbondale (the main traffic light at Hwy 133, and the light by Catherine Store). It has many short-term rentals in the area. The homes are more modest than some other neighborhoods, with prices that reflect this. Kristin lived in this community for her first few years in the valley, so she’s pretty familiar with it. There are amazing walking trails in the back acreage of the community, where you can see Golden Eagles along side a stretch of the Roaring Fork River.

CARBONDALE | Learn more at carbondale.com
While Carbondale is only 2 square miles, it has several different neighborhoods. The two main roads are Main Street (runs east/west), and Hwy 133 (runs north/south).
The downtown/Main Street area is the center of town, and has smaller homes in an grid area that is very walkable. River Valley Ranch aka “RVR” is in the southern part of town, just west of Hwy 133. We live in between these two areas. RVR is a local golf/second homeowner community with several larger homes are available for short-term rentals.

Camping
For those daring enough to camp (we see you!), we can point you in the direction of a few options. Given the season and the colder temperatures at night, the only real option is disbursed camping and National Forest sites, as most major campgrounds close for the season. The KOA is open, but for cabin rentals only.
